Las Fallas starts on the 15th March, but the 19th March is the big day. The city is covered with a myriad of ninots, huge. Anyone famous celebrity or politician can find themselves caricatured as a 20 foot papier maché figure.

One highlight of Las Fallas is the burning of these effigies. Local neighbourhood groups work for months creating the statues, within minutes they are crammed with fireworks and burnt through the night. Hundreds of firemen are on standby at different points in the city as these figures are burnt to the ground - a fantastic form of satire.

Burning effigies are not the only speciality during Las Fallas. Every day sees different neighbourhood competing for the best display, the prize going to the loudest.
The explosions are so loud that some faint. Women that are pregnant are banned from attending the mascleta and it is not uncommon to see the odd person whisked off to hospital. So come if you dare. This event is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
